Can You Cure Celiac Disease By Changing Your Diet

Friday, January 18, 2013

Celiac or Coeliac disease is an autoimmune disorder of the small intestine that occurs to people who are genetically predisposed to it. Symptoms include chronic diarrhea, fatigue or symptoms in other organs and is caused by the gluten protein found in wheat and other grain crops. The way to treat it is by adopting a gluten free diet which allows your small intestine to repair itself. One specific way with which you can cure this disease and one that has many additional health benefits is by adopting the paleo or primal diet. Some people believe that we are all suffering some kind of bad reaction to grains so this article will be worth reading whether you have celiac disease or not.

It should be noted that people that have celiac disease often also have an intolerance or an allergic reaction to dairy products, corn and soy. The commonality that all these foods share is that as humans we have only been eating them in the last couple of thousand years. Evolutionarily speaking this is a very short time as we evolved over millions of years to eat meat, seafood, fruit, vegetables, nuts and eggs. The reason why gluten and other processed food make us ill is that we have not evolved to benefit from them or we are not immune to it's harmful effects like other animals.

So in order to cure your celiac disease and get rid of many other ailments you first and foremost need to eliminate all grains from your diet. This means all kinds of bread, anything that contains flour as well as all forms of rice. You might wonder how you can still create good tasting meals by eliminating these ingredients, I'll point you to some more in depth resources in a moment but will give you a quick and easy set of guidelines.

First of all, even though the official food pyramid says that you should base your diet on grains more and more evidence seems to be showing that we don't need that many carbohydrates to be healthy, we get more than enough from fresh fruit and vegetables. If you do feel the need for carbs then try sweet-potatoes which provide complex carbs. Also, you can safely eat more lean meat and nuts which provide protein which makes you feel full much quicker than unhealthy empty carbs found in so much processed food. All in all you can see that the closer you eat to how our ancestors ate the healthier you will be.

If you feel overwhelmed by all the conflicting information about food and nutrition I highly suggest you take a look at the Paleo Diet. It is the diet that humans naturally evolved to survive and thrive one. I've written a free introductory guide book about the Paleo Diet which you can get from my site.
